Case Study: ASBEC Women in Construction Future Leaders Pilot Program

The ASBEC Women in Construction Future Leaders Pilot aimed to improve retention and enhance leadership prospects for women in the construction industry.

Over 130 women helped to shape the pilot, by sharing their experiences in the construction industry, and how we can best support their career journey and expand their leadership opportunities.

Key insights which shaped the pilot include:

  • The survey identified that there is a lack of female role models in 63% of workplaces. The MasterMind workshop format is designed to deliver a peer-to-peer learning, and develop connections outside of work through a cohort experience.
  • Less than half the leaders are actively ‘walking the talk’, so it is important that a program engages with the employer/workplace, not just the women.
  • 58% of women did not have a clear understanding of how to achieve their 5-10 year career goals, so career planning and goal setting is included in the program.
  • While many workplaces offer informal mentoring, the outcomes may be inconsistent. Recommend coaching as an alternative to mentoring to accelerate career development
