ASBEC contacted all Federal, State and Territory Building, Energy and Climate Change ministers expressing industry concerns over proposed South Australian delays to National Construction Code.
A coalition of ASBEC members and the Australian Council of Social Service wrote seeking a meeting to discuss the importance of delivering both ongoing improvements to, and nationally consistent minimum standards for new homes. In particular concerns that:
- the South Australian government’s recent decision to restrict National Construction Code (NCC) changes for 10 years will cause the state to fall behind in adopting new technologies and practices that could lead to healthier, more sustainable and resilient buildings.
- any confirmed delays by one jurisdiction might result in more jurisdictions considering their own NCC deferrals – threatening both the achievement of Australia’s emissions reduction commitments and the productivity benefit of delivering a consistent national construction code.
