ASBEC welcomes the opportunity to provide input to the Productivity Commission’s research into housing construction productivity. Our submission comprised both a letter and a 500 word summary based on recent advocacy by a coalition of industry, built environment, and social sector stakeholders to all Building Ministers calling for a reaffirmation of their commitment to the regular three-year review and update of the National Construction Code (NCC).
We urge the Productivity Commission to consider the critical importance of changing rules and regulations in relation to housing construction, not just for reasons of safety, but to ensure that the housing construction sector can achieve optimal productivity and innovation outcomes. The National Construction Code (NCC) serves as the national standard for building practices in Australia, encompassing critical areas such as fire safety, structural integrity, health, amenity, accessibility, and sustainability, including emerging issues like embodied carbon, resilience to our changing climate, and increased frequency and intensity of natural disasters.
